An Emotional Visit to Sderot: UN Deputy Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process and the UN Humanitarian Coordinator (unesco) Meets October 7 Survivor Dr. Ramiz Alakbarov – UN Deputy Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator – visited Sderot for an emotional meeting at the Israel Digital Center. Dr. Alakbarov met Gitit Butera, the Center’s Director, who shared her harrowing personal story from October 7, 2023 – when Hamas terrorists attacked Israeli communities, murdering and terrorizing civilians. Visibly moved, Dr. Alakbarov said to her: “No words can carry the weight of what you endured – but your voice must be heard. I carry it with me now, and I will make sure the world does too. This mustn’t happen again”. His visit was part of a UN tour to better understand the events of October 7 and the challenges facing local communities.
