What Is Zionism?

Zionism is the belief that the Jewish people have a natural right to an independent state in their historic homeland, the Land of Israel.

The word Zion appears in the Bible as another name for Jerusalem or Israel and symbolizes the deep connection of the Jewish people to this land for thousands of years.

In simple terms, Zionism is the national movement of the Jewish people, a return home.

Historical Roots

The Jewish connection to the Land of Israel spans more than three thousand years. The kingdoms of Israel and Judah, the Temple in Jerusalem, the prophets, and Jewish tradition are all rooted in this land.

Even after centuries of exile, Jews never broke their bond with it. In every prayer, they turned toward Jerusalem, and at every Jewish wedding, a glass is broken as the verse “If I forget you, Jerusalem, let my right hand forget its skill” is recited, a reminder that even in moments of joy, the longing for Zion remains alive.
